Testimony from a widow in Kenya:
“My name is Anita Musibega, a widow with four children. Before I was married, I was a good girl. Although I did not know God, I went to church.
Then, I got married, and my husband made me forget about church as he made sure that we had visitors every Sunday. At first, I thought that they were just ordinary visitors, but later, I discovered that my mother-in-law was a witch doctor who lied to people, telling them that she had powers to heal.
Days went by and I continued to discover horrible things. My mother-in-law had a private room in her home where no one was allowed except for her and my husband. After our second child was born, things changed from bad to worse.
My husband would stay at his mother’s house for hours and hours, sometimes until midnight. When I asked him what he was doing, he beat me. No one could come to my rescue.
Then, the pattern changed, and my husband would leave the house at 9:00 pm, asking me not to sleep until he came back. One night, I followed him slowly, and watched him enter his mother’s house. What I saw was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
My husband came out with a huge snake wrapped around his neck. He was completely naked. A big cat that I had never seen since we were married was next to him. They started running, and disappeared into the darkness.
I went back to the house, but could not understand what I had just seen. When my husband came back, I was terrified and could not face him. I thought of running away the next morning. Awakening the next morning, I was summoned to my mother-in-law’s house where I was warned that I was never to run away nor share anything that I had seen with anyone else. Otherwise, I would become mad.
I lived in total fear, and had two more kids the next two years. It was during the birth of my fourth born that my mother-in-law died. I was still in the hospital because of the operation when they came and took away my baby for one day. I have no idea what they did to my baby, but my child is now paralyzed.
After the burial of my mother-in-law, my husband took over everything. I was once again warned never to enter the private room. Then, my husband began to try and force me to learn what he was doing, but I refused. He would call the snake out while we were alone in the house, but I would run away. One day, my husband locked me in the house, took the snake, and forced me to hold it like a little baby. This is all I remembered until I woke up in the hospital.
While I was in the hospital, some pastors came in to pray for us sick people. They gave us some booklets to read. Because I had fallen from a chair and had broken my arm, I had to stay longer in the hospital.
During this time in the hospital, I read the booklets which the pastors gave us. My eyes were opened, and I understood that we were worshipping other gods just like the Israelites. I wanted to run away, but had nowhere to go. My parents were dead. My brothers had sold our land, and had moved away to a place I did not know. The only place for me to go was back to my husband who was a witchdoctor.
Thanks be to God, as I was leaving the hospital, the pastor came and prayed for me. He gave me a set of the 68 lessons so that I could read the booklets while I was at home.
At home, I read the booklets and learned how God punished Sodom and Gomorrah with fire for listening to Satan. I read how God opened the ground that swallowed those who worshiped idols while Moses was at the mountain. I did not want to perish in the lake of fire.
As I was reading the booklets, I remembered how the pastor used to tell us about Satan and hell. The booklets taught us that there are only two tribes in the world–the good and the bad. The family that I had married into were bad people.
One Sunday, I sneaked out of the house and went to church. I asked the pastor to pray for me, as I wanted to be in the good tribe. I gave my life to Christ, and ran back home.
My husband continued with his night trips, but after one week, I was called to go collect his dead body. He was caught in a neighboring village, casting a spell in someone’s compound. The people in the village stoned him to death. After the burial, the villagers came, and we demolished his mother’s house, killing all of the snakes as well.
I thank God for the booklets which were given to me in the hospital. They brought light to me, and now, I have life again.”
