Testimony from Mercy Akello who is from the Karamojong tribe in northeastern Uganda. She became a believer in Christ in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, after having left her home in Karamojong.
“As a school dropout, I became a mother at a young age. After listening to the booklets, my life was transformed. I left Abim and moved to the capital city, Kampala, where I began to collect Karamojong children from the streets.
We would gather near the street, and I would read to them the Bible from the booklets. I would interpret for them in Karamojong’ language as many of them do not understand English. I live with them in the streets, and we gather together on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays. I am also teaching them English.
Though the work is tiresome, I rejoice to see the fruit that many of them are exhibiting, as they are now reading English and sharing their faith with others. There is no more fighting and drug abuse among them.
Today was my birthday. I chose to celebrate it with the children. We read the creation story as a reminder of how God can make things and even change us to be ambassadors. We also read the story of Cain and Abel. One boy said this:
“Aunty, I want to be like Abel. I want to always trust in God. I want to believe that God can save, and I also want to share this messages with my family!”
This broke my heart and I wept seeing what the Lord Jesus Christ is doing through
the little children.” Mercy Akello
