- When Saul disobeyed God, who did God choose to be the next king of Israel?
-David.
- How were Saul and David different?
-Saul did not believe that he was born into sin separated from God, but David did.
-Saul did not believe that God punishes all sin by death, but David did.
-Saul did not believe God alone was able to save him, but David did.
-Saul did not believe in God’s promise to send the Savior, but David did.
- After David finished building his house, what did he want to do?
-David wanted to build a house for God.
- Who was to be the one to build a house for God?
-David’s son, Solomon.
- What was the great promise that God made to David?
-God promised that He would send the Savior through the descendants of David.
- How was the temple that Solomon built for God like the tent that the Israelites built for God in the desert?
-Both the tent and the temple had a first room called the Holy Room.
-Both the tent and the temple had a second room called the Most Holy Room.
-Both the tent and the temple had a curtain which separated the two rooms.
- Because God is holy and hates all sin, what did the chief priest do in the Most Holy Room?
-He sprinkled the blood of animals on the Ark of the Covenant.
- What would God do when He saw the blood that the chief priest sprinkled on the Ark of the Covenant?
-God would withhold His punishment of the sins of the people for one more year until a better payment of sin would be made.
- Why was the blood of the animals not able to pay for the sins of the people?
-Because sin must be paid for by the death of the sinner.
- After King Solomon died, what happened to the Israelites?
-The Israelites could not agree on who would be the next king. Therefore, the twelve tribes of the Israelites split up and became two peoples.
- What were the ten tribes of the north called?
-Israel.
- What were the two tribes of the south called?
-Judah.
-Why has God always spoken to people?
-That they would be saved.
-God has also given His message to men to speak to people, that they would be saved.
-God gave His message to Noah, and Noah spoke to the people, that they would be saved.
-God gave His message to Moses, and Moses spoke to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, that they would be saved.
-God gave His message to Joshua, and Joshua spoke to the Israelites, that they would be saved.
-One day, God called an Israelite named Jonah.
-God gave His message to Jonah, and commanded Jonah to take His message to a wicked people living in a city called Nineveh.
-The people who lived in the city of Nineveh were called the Assyrians.
Let’s read Jonah 1:1-3a
1-The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:
2-“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3-But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish.
-Why did God want Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh?
-Because God loved the people of Nineveh.
-Because God wanted to save the people of Nineveh from the power of sin, death, and Satan.
-Why did Jonah run away?
-Jonah ran away because he did not want to go to the city of Nineveh.
-Why did Jonah not want to go to the city of Nineveh?
-Because the people of Nineveh were very wicked.
-Because the people of Nineveh were enemies of the Israelites.
-Because Jonah did not want God to save the people of Nineveh.
-Was Jonah able to run away from God?
Let’s read Jonah 1:3b-10
3-Jonah went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4-Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5-All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6-The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish.”
7-Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8-So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9-[Jonah] answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”
10-This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
-Was Jonah able to run away from God?
-No.
-Was Jonah able to hide from God?
-No.
-Was Jonah able to escape from God?
-No.
-No one can escape from God.
-Even Satan and his demons cannot escape from God.
Let’s read Jonah 1:11-17
11-The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked Jonah, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12-“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” Jonah replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13-Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14-Then they cried to the LORD, “O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased.”
15-Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16-At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.
17-But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.
-What did God do when Jonah disobeyed God and did not go to Nineveh?
-God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah.
-How long was Jonah in the stomach of the big fish?
-For three days and three nights.
-Was Jonah able to save himself in the stomach of the big fish?
-No.
-Who was the only One who was able to save Jonah?
-God.
-How are all people like Jonah?
-Just like Jonah was not able to save himself from the stomach of the big fish,
-All people are not able to save themselves from the power of sin, death, and Satan.
-Just like only God was able to save Jonah, only God is able to save all people.
-What did Jonah do in the stomach of the big fish?
Let’s read Jonah 2:1
1-From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
-Jonah admitted to God that he had disobeyed God.
-Jonah admitted to God that he had sinned against God.
-Jonah called on God to save him.
-Did God save Jonah?
Let’s read Jonah 2:10
10-And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
-What did God do when Jonah admitted that he had disobeyed and sinned against God?
-God made the big fish vomit Jonah onto dry land.
-Why did God save Jonah?
-Because Jonah admitted that he had disobeyed God.
-Because Jonah admitted that he had sinned against God.
-After God saved Jonah, did God tell Jonah that he did not have to go to Nineveh?
-No.
Let’s read Jonah 3:1-2
1-Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
2-“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
-God does not change.
-God never changes.
-God still wanted Jonah to take His message to the people of Nineveh.
-God still wanted to save the people of Nineveh.
-This time, did Jonah obey God and go to Nineveh?
Let’s read Jonah 3:3-5 & 10
3-Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city–a visit required three days.
4-On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.”
5-The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
10-When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened.
-This time, Jonah obeyed God and went to Nineveh.
-This time, Jonah took God’s message to Nineveh.
-Jonah told the people of Nineveh to leave the path of sin, and to follow the path of God.
-Did the people of Nineveh listen to the message of God that Jonah told them?
-Yes.
-God wants you to be like the people of Nineveh.
-God wants you to listen to His message like the people of Nineveh.
-God wants you to believe His message like the people of Nineveh.
-God wants you to leave the path of sin, and follow the path of God.
-God also chose many other men to be His messengers, and to tell the people His message.
-What were the men called that God chose to be His messengers, and to tell the people His message?
-Prophets.
-God sent some of the prophets to the people of the ten tribes of Israel.
-God sent some of the prophets to the people of the two tribes of Judah.
-What did the prophets tell the people?
-To leave the path of sin, and follow the path of God.
-The prophets also told the people that God wanted them to destroy their images.
-One of God’s prophets was named Isaiah.
-The prophet Isaiah went to the people of the ten tribes of Israel.
-Here is what God said through the prophet Isaiah to the ten tribes of Israel:
Let’s read Isaiah 10:6
6-The LORD said, “I send Assyria against a godless nation, Israel. I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.”
-What would happen to the ten tribes of Israel if they did not leave the path of sin, and follow the path of God?
-God would send the Assyrians to defeat the ten tribes of Israel, and to make them their slaves.
-Another one of God’s prophets was named Jeremiah.
-The prophet Jeremiah went to the people of the two tribes of Judah.
-Here is what God said through the prophet Jeremiah to the two tribes of Judah:
Let’s read Jeremiah 20:5
5-The LORD said, “I will hand over to Judah’s enemies all the wealth of this city–all its products, all its valuables, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away as plunder and carry it off to Babylon.”
-What would happen to the two tribes of Judah if they did not leave the path of sin, and follow the path of God?
-God would send the Babylonians to defeat the two tribes of Judah, and to make them their slaves.
-God has not changed.
-God still wants all people to leave the path of sin and follow the path of God.
-God will punish with eternal death all those who do not leave the path of sin, and follow the path of God.
